Lip Shading

lip shading

Lip shading (also called lip blush or lip tattoo) is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure that adds soft, natural-looking color and definition to the lips.

💋 How it works

A trained technician uses a cosmetic tattoo machine with a very fine needle to deposit pigment into the upper layers of the lips. Unlike lipstick, the goal is usually not a bold or dramatic color—it creates a more even, tinted appearance.

What it can do

  • Add a natural-looking tint
  • Make lip color more even
  • Define the lip border
  • Improve the appearance of pale or uneven lips
  • Create the illusion of slightly more defined lips
  • Reduce the need for daily lip color

It does not actually make your lips larger like lip filler does.

What happens during the appointment?

  1. Your natural lip shape and desired color are discussed.
  1. The technician outlines the lips.
  1. Numbing cream is applied.
  1. Pigment is gradually implanted into the lips.
  1. The lips are cleaned and aftercare instructions are given.
  1. A touch-up is commonly done after the initial healing period.

Does it hurt?

There can be some discomfort because the lips are sensitive, but numbing products are normally used. People often describe the sensation as scratching, tingling, or pressure.

Healing

Right after the procedure, the lips may appear much brighter and darker than the final result and can be swollen. As they heal, the color fades and becomes softer. Peeling/flaking is common.

The final color generally takes several weeks to settle.

How long does it last?

Usually around 1–3 years, although longevity varies significantly with skin, lifestyle, pigment, sun exposure, and aftercare. It gradually fades.

Important considerations

Lip shading can cause complications such as infection, allergic reactions, scarring, or uneven pigment if performed improperly. People who have a history of cold sores/fever blisters should specifically discuss this with their healthcare professional before the procedure, because lip trauma can trigger an outbreak.

If you’re choosing between lip shading, lip filler, and regular lip makeup, the main difference is that lip shading changes the color/definition, while filler changes volume.
